Project Goals:
The client wanted a soft and colourful planting scheme that would thrive in partial to full shade. Our aim was to:
- Reclaim and prepare the space for planting
- Improve the soil structure and drainage
- Introduce a carefully selected range of shade-loving perennial plants
- Add definition with modern edging and finishing materials
This shaded garden makeover was designed to enhance the surrounding landscape, create year-round interest, and require minimal maintenance.

🛠️ Site Preparation & Soil Improvement
The first step was clearing the site. We:
- Removed brambles, weeds, and all debris from the former oak tree site
- Levelled the bed to ensure even planting depth
- Applied a premium-quality topsoil base across the bed for improved fertility and structure
Once the new soil was laid, the bed was ready for planting.

🌱 Plant Selection and Perennial Planting Scheme
Working closely with a local nursery plant specialist, we created a custom perennial planting plan suitable for the shady conditions. The mix included plants with varying textures, forms, and flowering periods to ensure interest throughout the year.
Each plant was placed and spaced with long-term growth in mind, then fed individually with fish, blood and bone natural fertiliser during planting to boost healthy root development.
We finished the planting stage by top-dressing the entire bed with nutrient-rich compost, helping to retain moisture and suppress weed growth.

🧱 Modern Edging and Finishing Touches
To add structure and definition to the bed, we installed a 100mm black metal edging system, designed to complement the black window frames of the adjacent summer house.
Between the edging and the existing patio, we added decorative grey slate chippings, providing a crisp contrast that enhanced both the planting and the edging. This also helped with drainage and kept the planting border clean and defined.

💧 Aftercare and Ongoing Maintenance Guidance
At the end of the project, we provided the client with a detailed watering and plant maintenance guide, ensuring she could care for her new perennial garden with confidence.
The client was delighted with the transformation, especially how the planting softened the space while maintaining a smart, modern look.
