At Clive’s Gardening Services (CGS), we understand the growing demand for low-maintenance gardens that still look beautiful and well-kept. Mulching is one of the most effective ways to achieve this balance, helping to reduce the time spent on weeding and general garden upkeep while providing a neat, aesthetically pleasing finish. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at one of our recent projects in Chipping, where we transformed a garden into a low-maintenance, visually appealing space using mulch.
The Project Brief
Our client in Chipping came to us with a simple request: make the top section of their garden as low-maintenance as possible. The garden had become difficult to manage, with overgrown borders, unshaped shrubs, and weeds that seemed to take over every season. The client’s vision was a garden that would require minimal work but still maintain its structure and beauty.
To achieve this, they asked us to:
1. Clear the borders of all unwanted plants and weeds.
2. Prune and shape the existing bushes and shrubs.
3. Cut back any overhanging branches from neighbouring trees.
4. Lay a weed membrane across the cleared areas to prevent regrowth.
5. Cover the membrane with a 4-inch layer of ornamental bark mulch for both appearance and weed suppression.
6.Install a black edging solution to create a crisp border between the lawn and the beds, while also reducing the size of the beds and expanding the lawn area. (lawn is another project for the spring)
The Mulching Process
Step 1: Clearing and Pruning
Our first step was to thoroughly clear the borders. This meant removing any weeds, stray plants, and debris. The bushes and shrubs in the garden also needed some attention. We carefully pruned and shaped them, giving them a neater appearance while promoting healthy growth. In addition, we trimmed back any overhanging branches from the neighbour’s trees that were encroaching on the garden, allowing more sunlight to reach the plants below.
Step 2: Laying the Membrane
With the garden cleared and pruned, we laid down 250 meters of high-quality weed membrane across the top section of the garden. This membrane is crucial for preventing weeds from growing back, reducing the need for constant weeding and keeping the borders clean and tidy.
Step 3: Applying the Mulch
Once the membrane was in place, we covered the area with 40 tons of ornamental bark mulch. Mulch serves several purposes. It acts as a barrier to sunlight, preventing weeds from sprouting, while also helping the soil retain moisture, reducing the need for frequent watering. Additionally, it provides a polished, natural look that enhances the overall appearance of the garden.

Step 4: Installing Edging
To create a neat, defined border between the lawn and the mulch-covered beds, we installed 90 meters of edging solution. This not only gave the lawn a crisp, clean edge but also allowed us to reduce the size of the borders, thereby increasing the lawn area as the client had requested. A well-defined edge not only improves the appearance of the garden but also makes it easier to maintain in the future, as it prevents grass from creeping into the borders.

Benefits of Mulching
Mulching offers numerous benefits for homeowners looking to create a low-maintenance garden. Here are some of the key advantages:
1.Weed Control: A thick layer of mulch, combined with a weed membrane, suppresses weed growth by blocking sunlight and preventing seeds from germinating.
2.Moisture Retention: Mulch helps retain moisture in the soil by reducing evaporation, meaning you’ll need to water your plants less frequently.
3.Temperature Regulation: Mulch acts as an insulating layer, keeping the soil cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, which helps protect plant roots.
4.Soil Enrichment: Over time, organic mulches like bark break down and add valuable nutrients to the soil, improving its structure and fertility.
5.Aesthetic Appeal: Mulch provides a neat, finished look to your garden. Whether you prefer a natural bark or coloured mulch, it can complement the overall design of your landscape.
Results and Next Steps
With the top section of the garden now transformed, CGS has successfully met the client’s request for a low-maintenance solution. The neatly pruned shrubs, freshly laid mulch, and crisp lawn edges have revitalized the space, making it both functional and attractive.
The project is not finished yet—CGS will now move on to apply the same process to another area of the garden, ensuring the entire space is cohesive and easy to manage.
