Lawn Care Calendar

Clive’s Gardening Services offer lawncare services so you have a lawn you will be proud of, and your neighbours will be jealous of.

January Lawn Care

With January being such a cold month there is often little to do with a garden lawn. When there is a frost or snow on the lawn the best thing to do is not to walk on the lawn as the blades of grass break which can cause short term damage.

On mild days in January when the ground isn’t frozen and there is no frost or snow remove fallen leaves as fallen leaves can result in your lawn rotting underneath them.

February Lawn Care

If the weather is suitable do lawn repairs as required.

Mid-February when the weather is slightly warmer give the lawn its first cut.

March Lawn Care

Cut your lawn more regularly but at this time of the year as there is still a chance of frost cut your grass higher.

With lawn now firming up cut in some nice sharp straight edges.

An edging solution installed to keep the edge crisp all the time.

If you didn’t get a lawn treatment applied in February, March is the time to broadcast it.

March is the first month when the scarification process can be applied to your lawn.

Also, if the ground is firm any compact areas of your lawn can have the hollow tine aeration process applied to them.

April Lawn Care

Things are settling down in the garden and everyone is pushing to get their gardens looking smart in time for the Easter bank holiday weekend.

Dig out patches of coarse grass, often referred to as weed grass and a different shade of green. Dig it out like turf and fill and reseed the patch.

March and April are the best month to scarify whether you are doing light scarification for thatch or if your lawn has a bad moss infestation, it will have to be heavily scarified.

A lawn being scarified after not being scarified for four years.

Looking so much better with the moss out giving the lawn a chance to get water and nutrients to the lawn root system.

April is also a suitable month for your lawn to have a hollow tine aeration process applied.

A lawn that has had a heavy moss infestation will need overseeding and topdressing to thicken up the turf again.

Six weeks later after overseeding and topdressing

Apply a turf treatment if your lawn care schedule shows another lawn treatment is due.

May Lawn Care

If you didn’t book your lawn scarification in March or April early May is the last month to book in. If you miss the spring window book in for early autumn.

Increase the frequency of mowing in May and lower the cut as frosts will have passed so you your lawn will not get shocked with frost. Do not cut your lawn to short as again this can shock grass, plus you can scalp your lawn which can encourage weed growth.

The ground should be nice and firm in May so another great month for hollow tine aeration. A topdressing will be needed to be applied after this process.

May is considered the most effective month for a lawn treatment to tackle moss and weeds and keep your sward looking lush.

With warmth and moisture needed for overseeding May is a good month to overseed your turf.

June Lawn Care

Mowing – continue frequent mowing.

Another month when you can have your lawn Hollow tine aerated.

Keep on with lawn repairs or sowing new lawns in June, if it is dry remember to water daily for at least a month so the seed can germinate and get established. Remember, lawn repairs are not just about sorting out bald patches of sward they can level up your uneven lawn.

Only lay new turf if you have the time to water it daily.

Keep up with your lawn treatment programme, remember to change treatments as the season dictate.

When the warm weather finally arrives do not forget to water your lawn.

Hollow tine aeration can also be carried in June on your lawn.

December Lawn Care

Clear leaves and sticks regularly off lawns so you don’t get a heavy moss infestation over winter.

If your lawn has frost or snow on it try not to walk on your lawn to avoid damage to your grass.

If you must wheelbarrow heavy loads over your lawns this month and the lawn is soft, put boards on your lawn first.
