A calendar for lawn care

January Lawn Care

With January being such a cold month there is often little to do with a garden lawn. When there is frost or snow on the grounds the best thing to do is not to walk on the lawn as the blades of the grass break which can cause short-term damage. On mild days in January when the ground isn’t frozen and there is no frost or snow remove fallen leaves as fallen leaves can damage your lawn as in the second image below.

February lawn Care

If the weather is suitable repair lawns as required and do any turfing. Mid-February when the weather is slightly warmer gives the lawn its first cut.

March Lawn Care

Get your lawn back in the habit of being cut more regularly but at this time of the year on a higher cut as there is still a chance of frosts. With the lawn now firming up as the lawn is drying out it’s time to cut in some sharp straight edges.

Edging stepping stones in a lawn

This is a good month for a lawn edging solution installed to give a good crisp edge to the lawn.

Edging solutions

If you didn’t get a treatment applied for Moss in late February, March is the month to get it applied. March is the first month when the scarification process can be applied to your lawn.

Scarification

Also, if the ground is firm any compact areas of your lawn can have the hollow tine aeration process applied to them.

As usual, all Clive’s Gardening Services machinery is an industry-leading brand, and our machines are all bought new and regularly serviced.

April lawn Care

Things are settling down in the garden and everyone is pushing to get their gardens looking smart in time for the Easter bank holiday weekend. Dig out patches of coarse grass, often referred to as weed grass and a different shade of green so it can be unsightly in your lawn. Dig it out like turf and fill and reseed the patch.

March and April are the best months to scarify whether you are doing light scarification or if your lawn has a bad moss infestation, it will have to be heavily scarified.

April 1

Looking so much better with the moss out giving the lawn a chance to get water and nutrients to the lawn root system.

April 2

Lawn care overseeding

April is also a suitable month for your lawn to have a hollow tine aeration process applied. A lawn that has had a heavy moss infestation will need overseeding and topdressing to thicken up the turf again.

6 Weeks after overseeding

Feed your lawn if your lawn care schedule shows another lawn treatment is due.

May Lawn Care

If you didn’t book your lawn scarification in March or April early May is the last month to book. If you miss the spring window book in for early autumn. Increase the frequency of mowing in May and lower the cut as frosts will have passed so your lawn will not get shocked with frost. Do not cut your lawn too short as again this can shock grass, plus you can scalp your lawn which can encourage weed growth. The ground should be nice and firm in May so another great month for hollow tine aeration.

May is considered the most effective month for a lawn treatment to tackle moss and weeds and keep your sward looking lush. With the warmth and moisture needed for overseeding, May is a good month to overseeding your turf. This is another month suitable for hollow tine aeration or coring to reduce the compaction on your turf. A topdressing will be needed to be applied after this process.

June Lawn Care

Mowing – continue frequent mowing.  Another month when you can have your lawn Hollow tine aerated.

June Hollow Tine Aeriation

Keep on with lawn repairs or sowing new lawns in June, if it is dry remember to water daily for at least a month so the seed can germinate and get established. Remember, lawn repairs are not just about sorting out bald patches of sward they can level up your uneven lawn.

  • Laying turf – only lay new lawns if you have the time to water them daily.
  • Lawn treatments – keep up with your lawn treatment programme remember to change treatments as the season dictate.

Hollow tine aeration can also be carried out in June on your lawn. Keep up your lawn fertilisation programme and deal with moss, lichens, and weeds as necessary. Sit back and relax on your patio on those warm days and enjoy your lawn after all your turf management.
